#FeatureFRIYAY September: a new boxplot chart, Momentum Leader and more!

Curious to find out what’s new this month in Cumul.io? Read on below for your monthly Cumul.io news and product updates!

Visually compare data with the new boxplot chart

What if a user wants to compare data from different categories very easily? Or summarize visual variations of large datasets in one chart, without all detailed data points represented? You may think of using a histogram, but they’re not great for making comparisons in the blink of an eye.

While histograms (left) show more detail, boxplots (right) are great for a quick overview!

As a solution, we added a brand-new chart type to Cumul.io: the boxplot! A boxplot uses 5 data points to show the distribution of your data visually:

  • Median: the middle number in a range of numbers
  • 1st quartile: value below which lower 25% of data are contained
  • 3rd quartile: value below which upper 25% of data are contained
  • Minimum indicated line: Q1 – 1.5 * IQR (interquartile range)
  • Maximum indicated line: Q3 + 1.5 * IQR

They are great way to see how your numerical data is distributed, and show the skewness of the data. In one glance, you’ll see how your data are spread out and be able to detect outliers. This is especially useful for explanatory analysis, for example for researchers or people working with large datasets of IoT data, sensor data, etc.

But just as much, it can be used in typical business contexts. For example, use a boxplot to plot the number of products sold every month, and compare the consistency in sales performance of specific product lines.

Drag & drop boxplot in Cumul.io

If you want to give your users a simple, quick view to compare datasets side-by-side without showing detailed data points, you’ll want to give the boxplot a try!

More options to edit datasets in the dashboard editor

Imagine you’re creating a dashboard, and you come across something you want to change in your dataset. From now on, you won’t have to leave your dashboard editor ever again!

You can now change the following things in a dataset, directly from within the dashboard editor:

  • Change the details of your dataset: name, description, tags, etc.;
  • Reupload local datasets;
  • Change the sync schedule of web services;
  • Share datasets with other users;
  • Delete datasets;

In addition, any changes you make to your dataset will be immediately applied to your dashboard. So you don’t have to reload the page to reflect the changes on your dashboard!
